Ulcers
What are ulcers?
Ulcers are an open sore, or break in the mucosa or lining, of the gastrointestinal tract. They can occur anywhere in the GI tract, from the mouth through the rectum. They can be symptomatic (see below) or asymptomatic.
What are the symptoms of ulcers?
Symptoms of ulcers vary based on the anatomic location. They can include pain, bleeding, weight loss, and nausea. In the esophagus, they can cause pain or difficulty with swallowing. The bleeding can cause black or dark stool, or visible red/bright red blood in the stool.
How are ulcers diagnosed?
A careful history and physical exam are important parts to the diagnosis of ulcers. Often blood tests, and stool tests are used to exclude other conditions, and imaging, endoscopy and colonoscopy are often used together to help determine the presence of ulcers.
How are ulcers treated?
Treatment is dependent upon the location of the ulcer, as well as the cause of the ulcer. For example, if you are found to have a stomach ulcer related to NSAID use, then your provider may have you stop the NSAID and try a H2 receptor blocker or proton pump inhibitor to protect your stomach and allow it to heal. Other ulcers can be caused by certain viral or bacterial infections, and therapy is directed at eradicating those infections.
