Other FAQs about Infusion Therapy for IBD
What is infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy refers to fluid or medication treatments that are administered through a needle or catheter. At our Office Infusion Center, infusions are done intravenously, or through an IV.
This approach to treatment allows us to bypass the digestive system, which can interfere with the effectiveness of some medications. That can be particularly true for gastrointestinal (GI) conditions such as those we treat at Associates in Gastroenterology.
What conditions does infusion therapy treat?
Infusion therapy can be used in the treatment of a variety of conditions including autoimmune disorders, cancer and arthritis. At Associates in Gastroenterology, we offer infusion therapy for patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, both of which are autoimmune conditions.
We also offer IV iron replacement for patients with anemia. Immune therapy is also available to treat certain GI infections, including Clostridium difficile (also known as c. diff).
Why undergo infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy can be used to treat gastrointestinal conditions and improve your symptoms. In case cases, infusion therapy may be the most effective way to receive your treatment. That’s because with infusion, medication isn’t passed first through your digestive system. The digestive system can make medication less effective, particularly if you suffer from malabsorption. With intravenous infusion, the medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream.
How can infusions help treat my Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms?
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can create uncomfortable symptoms, and in some cases life threatening complications. A common treatment is biologics, which are drugs that generate from a variety of natural sources. Infusions can help treat Crohn’s disease and UC. In fact, many patients experience more immediate relief from symptoms from infusions. Infusions may also provide longer relief from symptoms.
Can I receive an infusion for COVID-19?
We do not offer monoclonal antibody therapy for COVID-19. Our infusion center offers infusion treatments for the autoimmune diseases Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. You can view a list of providers who have received a supply of COVID-19 therapeutic treatments by visiting the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment here.
